Best Banana Fritters Recipe

My homemade banana fritters recipe is delicious. In Indonesian and Malaysian cooking, banana fritters are battered and deep-fried ripe bananas.

Mash ripe bananas with flour, sugar, salt, and spices like cinnamon or nutmeg to make banana cakes. After spooning the dough into hot oil, it is fried until golden brown and soft and sweet.

Banana fritters are served as snacks or desserts with honey, chocolate, or caramel sauces. Serve them with ice cream or whipped cream for a sweeter treat.

How To Make The Best Banana Fritters

Banana fritters, also known as pisang goreng, are one of my all-time favorite snacks. They’re crispy on the outside, soft and sweet on the inside, and are perfect as a quick treat or dessert.

I’ve tried many variations of banana fritters, and I’ve perfected the recipe over time. In this post, I’m going to share with you my step-by-step guide to making perfectly crispy banana fritters, including some FAQs to help you along the way.

Banana Fritters Ingredients:

  • 3 ripe bananas
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions To Make Banana Fritters

Begin by peeling the ripe bananas and mashing them with a fork in a medium-sized mixing bowl. Make sure that the bananas are ripe but not overly soft or mushy, as this can make the fritters too wet.

In a separate mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. Mix well until all the ingredients are fully incorporated.

Add the dry ingredients to the mashed bananas and mix until the batter is smooth and thick. Slowly add the water to the batter, mixing continuously until the batter is smooth and has a thick consistency. You want the batter to be thick enough to coat the bananas but not too thick that it won’t spread in the oil.

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large saucepan over medium-high heat. You want the oil to reach a temperature of around 350°F (180°C).

Once the oil is hot, use a tablespoon or ice cream scoop to drop spoonfuls of the banana batter into the hot oil. Make sure not to overcrowd the pan or fryer, as this can cause the fritters to stick together and not cook evenly.

Fry the fritters for around 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove the fritters from the oil and place them onto a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.

Repeat the process until all the banana batter has been used up. You can also add other ingredients like chocolate chips or nuts to the batter to create a different flavor.

Once all the fritters are done, serve them immediately while they’re still hot and crispy. You can also serve them with a dipping sauce of your choice, such as honey, chocolate sauce, or caramel.

How To Store Banana Fritters

If you have leftover banana fritters, you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. However, keep in mind that they may lose their crispiness over time.

To reheat the fritters, simply pop them in the oven at 350°F (180°C) for 5-10 minutes until they are heated through and crispy again.

Banana Fritters Variations

If you want to mix up the flavor of your banana fritters, there are a few variations you can try:

  • Chocolate Banana Fritters: Add 1/2 cup of chocolate chips to the batter for a delicious chocolatey twist.
  • Nutty Banana Fritters: Add 1/2 cup of chopped nuts, such as pecans or walnuts, to the batter for some added crunch and nuttiness.
  • Coconut Banana Fritters: Substitute 1/4 cup of the all-purpose flour for coconut flour and sprinkle shredded coconut on top of the fritters before serving for a tropical twist.
