Ingredients
  

For the Cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup hot coffee

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Black food coloring optional

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease two 9-inch round cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk the dry ingredients together until they are well combined.
  • In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, vegetable oil, and eggs until they are well combined. Then, gradually add the buttermilk to the mixture, whisking continuously.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, whisking continuously. Mix until the batter is smooth and well combined.
  • Add the hot coffee to the batter and mix until it is well combined. The batter will be thin, but that’s normal.
  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool completely before frosting.
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until it is light and fluffy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, heavy cream, and vanilla extract, mixing continuously until the frosting is smooth and creamy. If you want a darker frosting, add a few drops of black food coloring.
  • Place one cake layer on a cake stand or plate, and spread a layer of frosting on top of it. Place the second cake layer on top of the frosting and spread the remaining frosting on top and around the sides of the cake. Smooth the frosting with a spatula.
  • To give the cake a dark and mysterious look, you can add some chocolate shavings or sprinkles on top. You can also decorate the cake with some fresh berries or edible flowers.
